trailanga swami and ramkrishna paramahansa

Many Saints met Sri Trailanga Swami during his lifetime. The famous Bengali Saint, Sri Ramakrishna, visited Sri Trailanga Swami ji and said that although he had taken a body, Trailinga Swami was truly Lord Shiva and the embodiment of Wisdom.

It is said that Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was greatly attracted towards Sri Trailanga Swami ji. There are at least four references to Sri Trailanga Swami ji in The Gospel of Ramakrishna.

Both of them were so happy to be with one another, and yet few words were exchanged. They communicated at the level of the heart. Ramakrishna recognized all of the signs that indicated Sri Trailanga Swami ji’s saintliness. Sri Trailanga Swami ji also was most respectful.

The story goes that when Ramkrishna Paramhansa came to Benaras, he met Sri Trailanga Swami ji, to whom he mentioned his desire to visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple. But as time was running out, he concluded that it would perhaps not be possible. As he said this and turned around to leave, there stood, instead of Swamiji, Lord Vishwanath himself! After seeing Sri Trailanga Swami ji, Ramakrishna said, "I saw that the universal Lord Himself was using his body as a vehicle for manifestation. He was in an exalted state of knowledge. There was no body-consciousness in him. After this divine sighting, Ramkrishna became a lifelong disciple of Sri Trailanga Swami ji.

In another story, young Ramakrishna (later Paramhamsa) went to Benaras only to see the great Trailanga Swami in 1869. Sri Trailanga Swami ji took his urine and sprinkled it on the idol of Goddess whom Ramakrishna worshipped and said that there was no difference between his urine and the Ganges water. Sri Trailanga Swami ji had reached that great state in which there was nothing non-sacred. Ramakrishna Paramhamsa said about Sri Trailanga Swami ji “I saw that Universal Lord Himself was using his body as a vehicle for His manifestation. He was in an exalted state of knowledge.

One day he paid a visit to Sri Trailanga Swami ji, who was then under a vow of silence. Sri Trailanga Swami ji beckoned him to take seat and held out his snuff-box to him as a mark of welcome. Sri Ramakrishna asked him some questions, which Sri Trailanga Swami ji replied by gestures.

Ramkrishna : God is one or two ?
Sri Trailanga Swami ji in reply showed his fore finger.

Ramkrishna: What is religion?
Sri Trailanga Swami ji :-Nothing but truth.

Ramkrishna: What is the duty of a living soul?
Sri Trailanga Swami ji : To see in his own soul the divine soul or universal soul and serve him.

Ramkrishna : What is love?
Sri Trailanga Swami ji: To worship your own deity by all the modes (nine in number) of Bhakti and to get into ecstacy until tears start flowing from your eyes.

Sri Trailanga Swami ji was then constructing a bathing ghat. At the instance of Sri Ramakrishna, one of his attendants dug a few spadefuls of earth for the work, which pleased Sri Trailanga Swami ji greatly. The Master invited him one day to the home of Mathur, a disciple and entertained him with great respect.
